Happy New Year everyone and welcome back to the Geekly News in 2017, with another year ahead of us, full of Geekly goodness!
Doctor Strange In Thor Ragnarok
Disney's fanclub, called D23, released a Newsletter for the New Year about stuff they are excited to finally show their fans in 2017! The most interesting tidbit was that Doctor Strange's role in Thor Ragnarok will seemingly be more than a little throwaway cameo as we have believed before.
"We’ve all been obsessed with Baby Groot since he danced his way into our hearts in 2014, and now we can finally watch our favorite tiny, talking plant save the galaxy with his gang of unlikely heroes when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 zooms into theaters in May. If you need even more intergalactic, world-saving action, Thor: Ragnarok in November brings together Thor, the Hulk, and Doctor Strange to face off against intergalactic baddies both familiar and new. Of course, we can’t talk about fighting off bad guys in space without mentioning a certain movie about the war in the stars… We may have wait until December, but Star Wars: Episode VIII will finally reveal what happens next to our favorite characters from The Force Awakens."
The Rock And Henry Cavill Tease... Something
Dwayne The Rock Johnson and Henry Cavill, who have been cast in the DCEU as Black Adam and Superman respectively, shared a picture on their social media accounts after Christmas which showed the two of them celebrating the Holiday together with a glass of whiskey, talking about the future of DC movies, which was shown by the hashtags #DCworldscollide #BlackAdam #Superman
What that exactly means for the future is uncertain, but it definitely hints at either an appearance of The Rock's Black Adam in the Man of Steel sequel, or an appearance of Cavill's Superman in the Shazam movie, which will feature Black Adam as the main bad guy. I actually think it might be the former, as it would be easier to introduce the concept of Black Adam and Shazam in a Superman movie and then spin off, instead of starting on their own.
I would be down for a Smackdown between Kal and Adam, so it is exciting how that would turn out. Photoshop wizard Bosslogic has created an image that teases the end of the conflict if Adam would win. You can check out that awesome piece of art above.
James Mangold Talks Logan
Director James Mangold talked a bit more about his upcoming 2nd Wolverine film Logan to Filmisnow. You can check out the entire interview above!
When asked how the movie will be different from other superhero movies he had this to say:
"Logan is an attempt to bring an end to Hugh's amazing line of performances as Wolverine. And the ambition of doing that is to try and make an 'adult film' about Wolverine. To make a movie for grownups. We're not trying to make a movie that [satisfies] everyone. We're trying to make a movie that stands out and is different because it's kind of a grownup drama that also features intense action."
Sounds great to me and I have to say that Logan is easily my most anticipated Marvel movie in a while! Can't wait to see how this one plays out!
McConaughey Talks Guardians Vol.2
Matthew McConaughey apparently talked with Marvel Studios about acting the part of Star Lords father in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy vol.2, but declined the offer. Talking to Playboy he shared his reasons on passing on that role.
"I like Guardians of the Galaxy, but what I saw was “It’s successful, and now we’ve got room to make a colorful part for another big-name actor.” I’d feel like an amendment. The Dark Tower script was well written, I like the director and his take on it, and I can be the creator, the author of the Man in Black—a.k.a. the Devil—in my version of this Stephen King novel. We’ve done the first one. It’s a fantastic thriller that takes place in another realm, an alternate universe, but it’s very much grounded. For instance, the gunslinger’s weapon isn’t a lightsaber or something; it’s a pistol. I enjoyed approaching my character as if I were the Devil having a good time, getting turned on by exposing human hypocrisies wherever he finds them."
As bummed as I am not to see him in vol.2, but I kinda get his thought process, especially when you look at how wasted Glenn Close and even Benicio Del Toro were in the first Guardians films. Still super hyped about vol.2 of course!
